Exercises for arms, shoulders and upper body
Lie on the floor or on a bench with the barbell across your chest. Press the bar up until your arms are straight and lower again. Repeat the exercise and possibly vary the speed of the arm movement.
Military press is a great exercise to train your shoulders.
Stand hip-width apart with the barbell at the upper part of the collarbone and press the bar upwards so that you extend your arms completely above your head. Lower the barbell again and repeat.
Exercises for legs and buttocks
Lunges are an effective exercise for training legs and buttocks.
Place the barbell on your shoulders and take a large step forward with one leg. Lower your body until your front knee is bent at an angle as close to 90 degrees as possible. Your back knee should be close to the floor, but not hitting the floor. Hold the lunge position for a moment and then press up through the heel of the front foot as you return to your standing starting position.
Deadlifts train both the back, legs and buttocks.
Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and place the barbell on the floor in front of you. Bend down and grab the bar with either an overhand grip or an underhand grip - whichever feels weirdest to you. Push through your heels and slowly extend your legs until you are standing fully upright with the barbell in your hands.
Lower the barbell back down by bending at the hips and slightly at the knees, making sure to keep the barbell close to the body at all times.
Pay attention to keeping your back completely straight, tense up in your core and keep your shoulders back throughout the exercise.
Squats are one of the most well-known training exercises, and for good reason - they are very effective.
Place the barbell on your shoulders and lower yourself down as if you were going to sit down on a chair. Keep your back as extended as possible and lower yourself down until your thighs are approx. parallel to the floor. Hold the position for a short moment and slowly and controlled return to your starting position.
Biceps curls are an exercise that primarily trains your biceps muscles in the upper arms. It is really good to do with a curl bar/curl rod, but can also be done with a classic barbell.
Hold the barbell with an underhand grip and keep your arms down along your body. Lift the barbell up toward your shoulders by bending your elbows. Remember to keep your elbows close to your body. Slowly lower the barbell back to the starting position and repeat.

When you buy a barbell, it is important to consider which exercises you want to use the barbell for and which extra parts you want with your barbell.
