Versatile training with free dumbbells

It is only the imagination that sets limits on how many different training exercises you can do with dumbbells - especially if you have a wide range of weight classes.

There are many exercises that isolate specific muscle groups, which is why many believe that it requires exercise machines in a gym. Enrollment in a gym is an option, but never a necessity, because with a few sets of dumbbells you have almost endless possibilities for your training. With dumbbells, you get off to a really good start in your training of the whole body.

In the post, we have collected some of the countless exercises you can do from home. You can easily find exercises that train the whole body or specific muscle groups using simple dumbbells.

Training exercises | Exercise the whole body with dumbbells

A classic misconception about dumbbells is that they are only good for training the arms, but dumbbells are much more versatile than that. Many home exercises are basically without weights, but if you are experienced, you can easily upgrade many of the exercises with a dumbbell, to provide more resistance and thus become even stronger.

In our large selection you will find dumbbells with many different weights, so you can add just the weight to your exercises that you prefer. It can be an advantage to have several sets of dumbbells available, as different exercises require different numbers of kilos.

Below you will find some examples of exercises with dumbbells for different body parts. The exercises are just a few examples of the countless possibilities that exist in training with dumbbells.

Exercises for training legs and buttocks

  • Hip thrust/hip lift

Hip thrusters are a fantastic exercise for training both legs, buttocks and stomach. You do the exercise by lying on your back on the floor with a dumbbell over your hip. Now lift your lower back completely off the floor and slowly lower your lower back so that it almost hits the floor. With dumbbells on your hips, the resistance for your thighs and buttocks is increased.

  • Squats

Squats are one of the most classic training exercises for legs and buttocks. The exercise is done by standing with your legs slightly more than hip-width apart. Lower yourself to your knees as if you were to sit down on a chair and try to keep your weight evenly distributed over the entire foot while avoiding letting your knees fall inward.

Bend your knees down until your thighs are roughly parallel to the floor, while keeping your back straight to avoid bending forward too much. Slowly rise back up to the starting position and repeat the exercise.

This exercise can be hard enough in itself, but if you are more experienced, a pair of dumbbells can increase the resistance and thus make the training more effective.

Exercises for arms and upper body

Below you will find some of the best training exercises for arms, stomach and back that will effectively strengthen these muscle groups.

Bench press

Lie on your back on an exercise mat or bench. Place a dumbbell in each hand and hold the dumbbells at arm's length at shoulder height with palms facing the ceiling.

Slowly lower the dumbbells down to your chest and press them back up.

Shoulder press

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and a dumbbell in each hand placed at your shoulders. Slowly press the dumbbells up overhead and slowly lower them back down.

Biceps curl

Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and a dumbbell in each hand. Hold the dumbbells down by your sides with your palms facing forward. Raise the dumbbells up to your shoulders by bending your elbows and slowly lower the dumbbells again.

Tricep extension

Place your feet shoulder-width apart with a dumbbell in each hand. Raise both dumbbells above your head, then bend your elbows so the dumbbells come down behind your head. Stretch your arms up again and repeat the exercise.

Russian twist

Sit on the floor and bend your knees with your feet flat on the floor. Grab a dumbbell in both hands and raise your legs slightly so that they still form a 'V'. Now rotate your upper body from side to side, alternately to the right and left, while holding the dumbbell in front of your chest.

Benefits of training with dumbbells

There are many advantages to training with dumbbells over other training equipment.

Dumbbells make it easy to train effectively from home

  • Free dumbbells are easy to adapt to your training, as most training exercises can be done with dumbbells. Dumbbells are available in many weight classes, so you can easily find a dumbbell that suits your body and training.

Dumbbells are easy to transport and store

  • Loose dumbbells are often small in size, so you can easily store them, pack them in your weekend bag or take them on holiday.

More natural movements

  • Exercises with dumbbells are often exercises that mimic the body's natural movements. They help you build up your functional strength, which will be felt in everyday life.

Less risk of injury

  • By using dumbbells, the risk of injury is reduced than by using larger and heavier training equipment. This is because you have more control over your movements when doing exercises with free dumbbells.

How to use dumbbells?

How you should use dumbbells depends on the exercise and your training program. There are several things to be aware of when using dumbbells correctly:

Choose the right weight for your training

  • It is important to choose an appropriate weight that suits the exercise and your level. If you are a beginner, you can advantageously choose a low weight and later choose slightly heavier dumbbells.

Warm up before training with dumbbells

  • Warming up such as stretching exercises, light running or light intensity exercises is important to warm up the muscles before training.

Use a proper grip

  • Hold the dumbbells with a firm grip.

Controlled movements and correct posture

  • It is important to perform the exercises in a controlled manner to avoid injury. Avoid swinging the dumbbells too much in your hands and maintain a good and stable posture.

How heavy should dumbbells be?

The choice of weight for your dumbbells depends on both your training experience, your goal for the training and the exercise you will use them for.

However, there are some general rules that can help you estimate the weight of your dumbbells.

Beginner: If you are a beginner to strength training, it is a good idea to start with light dumbbells weighing between 1-5 kg.

Practiced: If you have experience of training with dumbbells and are in good shape, weights of 5-10 kg will be suitable.

Aim of the training: If you are training to build muscle mass, then your choice of dumbbells should have a heavier weight. However, lighter weights are really suitable for toning the body.

As your form improves, you can gradually increase the weight of your dumbbells.
