It is always a good idea to have several curling rods to choose from so that you can vary your training. In this way, you can train strength with heavier, fewer repetitions, but also train endurance with lighter and more repetitions. When purchasing several curling bars, a stand is recommended so that you have control over your training equipment.
What is a curling iron?
A curling bar stands out from a regular barbell in several ways. In terms of appearance, it is, as the name already indicates, curled or bent in the rod, so that two bends are formed for the hands. The design of a curling bar is created so that you get a better grip and your wrists are under the least possible strain. In this way, you can train with several kilos without overloading your wrists during training.
However, the name also indicates the name of the exercise for which the bar is used, namely curls. A curl bar is used in the following way for biceps curls:
- Stand with your feet hip-width apart.
- Grasp the curling bar with your palms facing up.
- In the starting position, you now stand with your arms fully extended with the curling bar in your hands, back straight and shoulders slightly backwards and downwards.
- Now curl/lift the bar up towards your shoulders by only bending your arms. It can be super tempting to use other muscles to swing the bar up, but this doesn't train your upper arms, but rather your back. So make sure to isolate the arms so they are the ones lifting the bar.
- From shoulder height, you now lower the bar again slowly and controlled back to the starting position. It is important that you do not bend your wrists and that you keep your elbows close to your body throughout the exercise.
- Repeat the exercise as needed.
The curl bar thus makes it easy and ergonomic to train biceps in home training, and with a fixed weight on the bars, you do not need to calculate the weight of the bar when you assess how heavy your curl bar should be.
