How heavy should my dumbbells be?

One of the most asked questions is how heavy the dumbbell should be, and there are some factors that you can consider when choosing the weight of the dumbbell:

What is your strength level?

  • If you are a beginner, it can be smart to start small. It's always smarter to start lighter and upgrade than to start too heavy and hit the wall because you can only do three reps. A good rule of thumb is: if you can easily take over 15-20 repetitions, your dumbbell is too light, and if you can take less than 8, it is too heavy.

What exercise should you use the dumbbell for?

  • If you want to train biceps and have many repetitions and sets, dumbbells, which are in a good medium place in relation to your strength, can be a good idea.
  • If you want to train triceps, where you hold one dumbbell and lower it behind your head with both hands, a heavier model dumbbell can help, as you use both hands in this exercise.

The best advice is to get yourself a small selection of dumbbells of different weights. In this way, you have both for different exercises, but also a selection that can follow your development, so that you can gain weight, the stronger you become.

How to use dumbbells?

Dumbbells are one of the most versatile training tools. You can use dumbbells for many different exercises. The most well-known is the biceps exercise, where you stand with your feet hip-width apart, arms outstretched and a dumbbell in each hand. You slowly lift the dumbbells by bending your arm until the dumbbell hits your shoulder. You can choose to switch between the arms or lift parallel. The most important thing is that your elbows stay close to your body and that you don't bend your wrists.

In addition to the classic biceps exercise, you can use the dumbbells to train the triceps, as previously mentioned. You can also use dumbbells as extra weight for your sit-ups by holding the dumbbells on your chest while you rise in the sit-up. The only limit to what the dumbbell can be used for is the imagination.
